With Father’s Day coming up, I couldn’t help but think about how lucky I am. My father is so great he deserves an award. He is constantly stuck listening to me go on and on about everything, when all the poor guy wants to do is play golf.

My dad is sweet and kind, yet strong and aggressive.  It’s all about solid values with him, above all else. His priorities have been set since the get-go, so it’s no surprise that he’s a brilliant role model.

I’ll tell you more about his stellar qualities and how his life could have easily played out next week.  For now, I want to talk about a little something I inherited from this dad of mine —  GRIT.

There are days when I want to say: The heck with it … I’m going back to bed with a bag of Twizzlers, and what’s it to you, anyways? But in a few seconds, that thought disappears, my internal drive takes over and I get going again.  What is that thing that keeps us going? It’s what I call grit.

Like my Nancy Drew obsession, I’m also a girl of grit, times 10!

My Fave ‘Grit Factor’ Stories:

  • Have you read any of the books in the wildly popular Chicken Soup for the Soul series? The co-author, Jack Canfield, was told by 144 publishers to “hit the road, Jack” before finally landing a publisher that said “yes” to his manuscript called Chicken Soup for the Soul. He and co-author Mark Victor Hansen became best-selling authors, selling more than 115 million books worldwide.
  • Did you ever see any of the Rocky films? Sylvester Stallone was completely broke, living in his car, but somehow found it within himself to not only sell his screenplay for the movie Rocky, but also even scored the leading role in the film as a complete unknown.
  • The Grit factor also shows up, of course, in fictional roles. One of my favorite movies, The Hunger Games, showcases female lead protagonist Katniss Everdeen, whose grit is the basis behind the entire gripping storyline.
  • Your Grit really comes from your “why” in life. It’s part of your purpose. It’s a goal or a mission that you want to fulfill so deeply, your physiology won’t let you stop plowing ahead, even when turbulence hits, because as sure as I’m standing, it will.

I was lucky to have my dad as a role model. We kids observed a never-give-up philosophy every day growing up.

But let’s get to food. Yes, you need Grit in the kitchen, too. You have to be patient, try a lot of different combinations and recipes before getting it just right. This one today may be my best recipe EVER.
