A lot of women come to me feeling miserable for no clear reason. They have a variety of symptoms including:

It’s Frequently Hormones—And That’s Good News!
These days, most of us know that menopause can be a challenging time for women, both physically and emotionally. But fewer of us—and too few doctors—understand perimenopause.
Generally, if a woman is younger than 45, perimenopause is a diagnosis doctors are unlikely to even consider. But it’s not uncommon for perimenopausal symptoms to begin when a woman hits her mid-30s. And though it’s rare, they can even begin as early as 25.
When I see the symptoms I listed above in women who are in their 30s or 40s, one of the first things I do is recommend testing hormone levels.
Perimenopause is a time of fluctuating hormones that can wreak havoc on women both physically and emotionally. Some women even say it can feel like going through adolescence again, except nobody else is as understanding of your internal craziness.
So how is this good news?
Because diminishing hormones and hormone imbalances can often be treated in a way that carries few risks and leaves you feeling great.
The Key Is Replacing Deficient Hormones at Perimenopause or Menopause with Bio-Identical Hormones.
Here’s why I love talking about hormones – when they come in the natural form. Bio-identical hormones are typically derived from a plant product with the same structure as the hormones humans produce. Because they have the same structure, there are very few negative side effects associated with bio-identical hormones.
Here’s where the myth-busting comes in.
In 2002, the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) released major findings about links between the use of synthetic hormones and increases in heart disease, strokes, a variety of cancers, and other diseases. Since then, many women have been reluctant to take hormones.
But bio-identical hormones are not like synthetic ones. Synthetic hormones, such as Premarin® and Provera®, are made of things like chemicals and horse urine. And it probably wouldn’t surprise you to hear that a horse’s hormone structure isn’t identical to yours. This causes problems.
In contrast, studies show that replacing deficient estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone with bio-identical hormones actually offers protection against some cancers, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and declines in cognitive and sexual functioning.
These results have been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and the New England Journal of Medicine.
Of course, hormone replacement therapy isn’t for everyone. Women who have had breast or endometrial cancer, strokes, or blood clots generally should not take hormones, even if they are bio-identical.
But for those who don’t have these or other risk factors, the message is clear: The dangers associated with synthetic hormones generally don’t apply to bio-identical ones.
One More Myth to Debunk
Here’s another thing I hear:
“Shouldn’t we age naturally? Isn’t it natural for our hormones to decline and unnatural to mess with them?”
My answer is that nature only cares about our optimal functioning when we’re in our reproductive years. Historically, most people didn’t live much longer than that. And those who did rarely strove to be inspired, creative, productive, and vibrant well into their second half-century of life.
But there’s no reason we shouldn’t. I don’t know about you, but I’m not just settling for living halfway when there is something I can do to take action. I’m living full out.
