There are more than 20 different types of collagen. However, as high as 90% of the collagen in your body is made up of Type I, II, and III.

Types of Collagen

Type of Collagen

Key Location(s)

Type I

Bone, tendon, skin, ligaments, extracellular matrix, teeth

Type II

Cartilage, eyes

Type III

Blood vessels, muscle, skin

Regardless of the type, collagen’s main role is to help tissues stretch without tearing. It also contributes to your ability to move and the stability and shape of tissues and other internal structures.

Think of collagen as the “glue” that holds your body together. It’s the reason your skin moves when you move, and bounces back after you touch it.
